Mentality
My project was intended to show the loss of culture when coming from one place to another. I wanted to make this piece universal, meaning that it coincided with most types of cultures that immigrate to the US. The “box” in the lower right hand corner represents the culture that is contained in the individual. The only thing that made this piece of Filipino reference was that it was a guitar with a bahag as its strings. To me, a music lover, this means that this person’s culture had been described and inspired through music. However, when the piece moves toward the stairs on the left, it loses its content. This meant that the culture and ideals of the person get slightly lost and bended. This is represented by the empty boxes heading up the stairs. The stairs in this piece are symbolic of the psychological steps to success. I also made the background a sky at night because this is usually when flights to and from the Philippines take off.
This piece means so much to me because I’ve seen this happen to so many people. Also, this piece works in the reverse direction. When most people leave the states to go back home, they get a sense of re-connection. Going back, or even visiting for the first time, is monumental in one’s identity as a fil-am. The boxes come and go through the sky everyday with a mentality that seems to change within 12-14 hours. This piece is enigmatic depending on how you look at it. There is no distinction whether the change is for the better of worse, but the main message is that the change exists.
